Reduction In Carbonization Time with a New Type Charcoal-making Kiln

Abstract : To make charcoal in a kiln made from a steel drum can, about ten hours is required
from the time the firewood is lit until the charcoal is removed from the kiln. A long time is
necessary to carbonize material in the commonly used kiln for making black charcoal. For
reduction in the carbonization time, it was considered that the amount of heat supplied from
the outside strongly influences the time until the heat reaches the material to be carbonized.
In the present research, two drum cans were used to construct the kiln. One can was cut in
half (circular cross-section), and used to make the firewood chamber part and lids for the
carbonization furnace. The second can was used to make the carbonization furnace of the kiln.
The material to be carbonized is put into this furnace. The firewood chamber and
carbonization furnace were welded together to make the kiln. The kiln was surrounded with
autoclaved lightweight concrete insulating material. Dry soil was packed between the kiln and
the insulation. The material to be carbonized was placed in the kiln, and the kiln lids were put
in place. The kiln was covered with dry soil to prevent loss of heat. Small branches were
burned in the firewood chamber, and hot air was blown into the carbonization chamber to
carbonize the material. The result was the formation of dry bamboo charcoal in three hours,
and wood charcoal (from Japanese oak) in five hours.
